DIRECTOR OF DERMATOPATHOLOGY
BOARD CERTIFIED DERMATOPATHOLOGIST
Dr. Machtinger was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York into a working class Eastern European Jewish immigrant family. His family endured severe wartime privations, including the loss of many of its members during the Holocaust.
Dr. Machtinger graduated from Boston University College of Liberal Arts with a B.A. in medical science and a minor in philosophy, magna cum laude. He attended Boston University School of Medicine for the first half of medical school, and then attended State University of New York at Downstate in Brooklyn, N.Y. for the second half; he graduated with an M.D. degree from the latter in 1987.
He completed a year of internship in internal medicine at Staten Island University Hospital in 1988. After successfully completing the first year of neurology residency training at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1989, he opted to change specialties in favor of pathology. In 1993, he completed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and became board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. In 1994, he completed a dermatopathology fellowship at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He became board certified in dermatopathology in 1995.
He then spent several years as a staff pathologist/dermatopathologist at Empire Pathology Medical Group in Garden Grove, California. From 1996-2006, he was an assistant clinical professor at dermatopathologist on staff at University of California Irvine Medical Center.
In 2001, he joined Laguna Pathology Medical Group as its very first dermatopathologist, thus founding its dermatopathology division. That division has since grown beyond his wildest expectations to include 5 other very skilled and talented dermatopathologists.
Dr. Machtinger currently lives in Laguna Niguel with his wife Sharon and 3 extraordinary feline family members.
